West Lake
白堤
Bai Causeway
A willow-lined threshold between city and lake, remembered through the poetry and public works of Bai Juyi.

Detail from the Hangzhou.travel handscroll
Bai Causeway crosses the northern part of West Lake and joins the city-side shore to Solitary Hill. It is named in memory of the Tang poet-official Bai Juyi and his care for the lake.
Alternating willows and peach trees make the route a seasonal promenade. Like the Su Causeway, it shows how circulation, water management, planting and poetry became inseparable at West Lake.
