West Lake

Su Causeway
Six bridges carry a long, quiet path across the lake—an engineering work transformed into poetry.

The Su Causeway runs north to south across West Lake. It was formed from silt dredged under the direction of the poet-official Su Shi in the late eleventh century.
Its six bridges, willows and seasonal blossoms turn a water-management project into a sequence of framed views. This union of practical work and cultivated beauty is central to the character of West Lake.
