West Lake
三潭印月
Three Pools Mirroring the Moon
Three small stone pagodas hold candlelight above the lake, multiplying the moon across dark water.

Detail from the Hangzhou.travel handscroll
Three Pools Mirroring the Moon is the largest island landscape in West Lake. South of the island, three hollow stone pagodas rise from the water in a triangular arrangement.
When candles are placed inside, light shines through their round openings and reflects on the lake. Garden, island, water and moon become one carefully composed scene.
